The Humans - Matt Haig

I saw this book at my local library and was first drawn in by this beautiful cover, Also the reviews  said this book was funny which sounded a nice change from the dark thrillers I had been reading up to this point.

An Alien is sent to earth with one mission, To destroy evidence of a Mathematical discovery which will change the course of humanity. The alien is cast into the body of the Mathematician who made this discovery Professor Andrew Martin. After a very funny start involving the aliens ignorance of the human need to wear clothes in public, He is arrested  and his behaviour is put down to a mental breakdown.

Whilst carrying out his mission he has to live with Andrew's wife and his son. Both realise something is up. What we also realise as the book goes on Professor Andrew Martin was a bad father and an even worse husband. An alien species thrust into this dynamic without prior knowledge of what is right and wrong leads to many funny moments as well as many heart warming ones.

This book reaffirms one of my favourite things about sci-fi, being able to take a step back and see humanity, it strengths and its weaknesses through fresh eyes.

This book was a brilliant read, You dont even necessarily have to even like sci-fi to enjoy it. Aspects of the story certainly unfold they way you expect them to but they are executed really well. Give it a read.

Elevation - Stephen King

Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed films and series based on the writings of Stephen King, however I have always had people warn me away from the books saying as a writer he pads the novels out by going into too much detail. When I saw this book of a mere 140 pages it seemed a good opportunity to sample the writers work in a bite-size form. Our protagonist in this story,  Scott Carey, Visits a doctor as he is constantly loosing weight. No matter what he's wearing or what he's carrying upon his person he weighs the same and his weight is dropping daily, despite this however his appearance stays the same. He is against getting help for fear of being treated like a test subject so goes about his day to day life living with the problem. Thinking about it I have not chosen the first book I write about very well, None of the characters in this story have much about them and border on being plain stereotypes. A lot of this story focuses on Scott's neighbours, who ar...

New Blog

So, Sometime ago I had a blog, you know back in the days everyone had a blog! Before everybody had 500 friends they could share up to the minute information on what they were doing, what they were eating and where they were going. We had Bebo but that was nowhere near the social media invasion we have nowadays. A couple of years ago I decided to jump off the conveyor belt of junk we call Facebook and Twitter, as a way to find more time to do things I enjoy, rather then mindlessly scrolling through a never ending feed of the mundane. The plan of action has worked, I now seem to have way more free and unhindered time to play more games and more importantly more time to read books. A hobby i haven't really been able to enjoy since a very young age. The only problem now is in my solitary world, I have nowhere to discuss or anyone to discuss with, the things I am getting so much joy out of. My wife seemed to go off reading the moment I took it back up, so asking her to read anythi...

Harry Potter & The Cursed Child

Recently I decided to get back into the Harry Potter series. I watched the films as they came out growing up, however trying to watch them now i cringe at the child acting, which for me takes away the magic. This lead to me then wanting to read the complete series of books to re-indulge into this world.I was raised in a very strict Christian household so reading the books was a challenge growing up, so only really managed to get as far into the series as book 4. Now well into my adult life I thought it was time to read through the entire series which I was pleased to find out, I could still find enjoyment in. All though the quality of the writing isn't great I was still really impressed and taken in by the amazing imaginative world in which the stories are set. After completing and for the most part enjoying the complete series, I noticed that Harry Potter & The Cursed Child was a play script which continued directly from the ending of Harry Potter & The Deathly ...
